Seasonal foods to enjoy this Autumn

Well it certainly feels Autumnal now and if like me you are really a Summer person let’s cheer ourselves up with the seasonal foods that are becoming available.

Seasonal produce offers not only greater nutritional value than non-seasonal vegetables and fruit but is also more environmentally friendly not just because of less carbon footprint but because foods grown outside in their natural season require less artificial energy to produce.

By eating seasonally we are also ensuring that we rotate our foods which as we know helps improve the health of our gut microbiome and thus improves our immunity which as we head into Autumn should also be at the forefront of minds.

So here is a list of Seasonal foods which I hope you will enjoy – they should all be available as British produce with the exception possibly of those marked with an *.

  • Carrots
  • Cavolo Nero
  • Squashes
  • Spinach
  • Courgettes
  • Chestnut Mushrooms
  • Cauliflower
  • Sweet Mixed Peppers*
  • Butternut Squash*
  • Sweet Potatoes*
  • Curly Cabbage
  • Apples
  • Blackberries
  • Pomegranates*
  • Brussel Sprouts ( too early for some?!)

Enjoy!

P.S Choosing organic may not always be possible due to budgetary constraints but if you prefer to buy organic produce for enviromental reasons such as sustainable farming and soil integrity or because you are concerned about increasing your body’s toxic load from the growing use of pesticides.

There are plenty of Organic Delivery companies like Riverford, Abel & Cole, Farmdrop and Wonky Boxes from Eversfield Organic or explore your local farm shops for seasonal and organic produce!
